We love the joy of a new beginning and so ask your blessing on the children who return to the hallowed halls of learning.

This is our legacy. We are heirs of a tradition steeped in calling out dangerous idolatries in culture. We are in a time of idolatry. We are the ones who need to bring us out of it.

What follows is a low-light reel of moments from my first couple years at TCPC. Thanks* to Kelly for birthing this monstrosity and for the presence of mind to remember all of my worst moments.

A big part of my career is to stand in front of groups of people and pretend that I know what I’m doing. Sometimes, I pull it off. But there is an inevitable risk to doing anything in front of people, and that is failure. It’s mispronouncing words. It’s losing a train of thought. It’s forgetting to turn the microphone off and singing full-blast. It’s telling a joke that dies harder than anything in history. People who have been in my office might have noticed that I occasionally keep out various desktop accoutrements that one might describe...

But what if church was fun? What if church decided to meet at a museum dedicated to the incredible gift of having fun? What if we had a dog in church every Sunday?* What if we grew food and enjoyed the quiet enjoyment of gardening? What if we played games regularly? What if church was fun?

I’m talking about hosting a potluck where the only food is the brownies that I brought (this is not a real situation, I would love to just sit in a room and eat a whole tray of brownies).

Talk to each other, begin to understand each other, begin to care about each other.

"God is Disappointed in You."

This blog post is an invitation. I want to learn about the thing you love that you don’t get a chance to talk about. I want to see your collection of magnets. I want to hear about the culture of competitive bagpiping. I want to learn about the cultural history of teeth. (none of those are real, but I’m willing to be proven wrong). I want to know what your thing is.

My two options are: 1) Barrel through the trespasses/trespass against us folks or 2) Leave a lengthy pause after I say debts and leave all the debts folks wondering if I fell asleep on the job.

The church is many things, but I submit that this is an important way that we can define church – a place where people feel comfortable not knowing something.

But there was one person who I think about more often than almost anyone else from that time in my life.

If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?

These photos exist without any particular theme, but they spoke to me today of what is growing, changing, and living at TCPC today.

They wanted him gone, so they arrested him. His arrest was not evidence of his guilt, but that doesn’t matter when powerful people want to have their way.
