On Power and Its Attendent Complications

Last week I wrote about the corrupt and fallible reality of power. I talked about how power as a means of domination has always been a stain on our history. I quoted figures both modern and ancient. Two of those figures that I held in dialogue were Thomas Hobbes and John Calvin. It just so happens that I have recently immersed myself in a dialogue between those two titans, and in this research I came across a particularly trenchant observation about the nature of power and abuse of said power. Below is an illustrated example of this spoken by both Calvin and Hobbes.

Peace,
Rev. Jeff Fox-Kline (By way of the great Bill Watterson)
Hobbes and Calvin remind us that power is never neutral; it reveals the condition of the human heart. If you’re curious about what that means for us today, I invite you to continue exploring with us. Join us this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church in Brighton as we seek a faith that transforms how we live with one another. There’s a seat saved just for you.
