Our 75th anniversary celebration is this coming Sunday! I’m excited for the chance to gather together and celebrate the community that we are all a part of.
As part of my preparation for this Sunday, I’ve been swimming in a veritable soup of TCPC history. As I’ve been immersed in this history, I’ve been struck by how much it still resonates today. We are the church we are because of who we have been, and we are who we will be because of who we are. You’ll hear some more wisdom from our forerunners on Sunday, but to whet your appetite, here is a note written in March of 1950:
TODAY
If you have a copy of the calendar for Sunday, October 2, 1949, the date of our first service at the Howard Johnson’s, you will find a story entitled “BEFORE TODAY.” That story explained briefly what happened from November 15, 1948 when the first meeting of those interested in this Twelve Corners Church was held, to that memorable Sunday.
This is another “TODAY.” After two Sundays at Howard Johnson’s, twenty three Sundays at the Harley School, “TODAY” we hold our twenty-sixth service in our new home. If you sometimes doubted divine Guidance, then ask any member of our organization committee and our working church group how- what is happening “TODAY” – was brought about. Try as any of us might to explain, we know that we actually received guidance and strength from that greatest of all organizers, Jesus Christ. Otherwise, we could not have completed the work that has been done.
Now that we are in our new home, we must pray for God’s blessing on it and for his guidance in our future work. If you have the true Christina spirit in your heart and you sincerely want to help your fellowman, then we can build here a model congregation that will exemplify the good Christian spirit. Let’s not be impatient with each other. Instead, let us overlook human frailties and continue to strive for perfection as nearly as possible. We can have exactly the kind of church that YOU want. It depends entirely on the members, and their willingness to sacrifice time and energy for this great cause.
Our most important work is to build for our children a foundation that will enable them to carry on and make the Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church “The strongest light in the night” of today’s troubled world.
The type of church we are depends entirely on the members. Nothing gives me more hope for the future of this church than those words.
Peace,
Jeff
